The Greatest Air Race
In 1919, when military surplus aircraft were being destroyed in their thousands, two Australian brothers who were flying the Vickers Vimy in the Royal Air Force bought one to enter the Greatest Air Race. They teamed up with an Australian fitter and rigger to have a go at winning the Race and to get home. It was not without its perils frequently flying over parts of the world that had never seen an aircraft. Four out of the six crews crashed en route – two of the crashes were fatal. The pilots were knighted for their courage and determination. The Vimy is an Australian aviation icon that has been preserved to this day. If you would like to learn more or support their preservation efforts, a trailer is available. To learn more, go to the Greatest Air Race website.
