The extraordinary Junkers J1 was one of the most significant warplanes of ‘The Great War’ precisely fulfilling the diverse roles for which it was designed: low-level contour fighting: tactical reconnaissance and contact patrol. One of the World’s first practical all-metal aircraft, the Junkers J1 also made extensive use of armour plate. This made the rugged biplane popular with its crews who appreciated the extra protection afforded by its tough construction as they performed their varied, and highly dangerous, activities over the battle front. Lightly-armed, der fliegende Möbelwagen (the flying moving van) proved practically invulnerable to enemy fire – not one was ever recorded as being shot down in action.
