The End of the Fokker Scourge

Nevertheless, the FE2b played its part in ending the ‘Fokker Scourge’ as German losses in the air began to mount. Even the great Max Immelmann would fall. ‘The Eagle of Lille’ had already been forced down on two occasions when defective synchronization gear had shot away his propeller. The third time (on 18 June 1916, during combat with FE2bs) it proved fatal, the Fokker’s engine spun loose ripping the light airframe apart and Immelmann plunged to his death.
